AUDREY HEPBURN
The British actress, model, dancer and humanitarian is probably recognised as one of the greatest style icons of the 20th century. She was ranked by the American Film Institute as the third greatest female screen legend in Golden Age Hollywood and was inducted into the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame.
Hepburn was first spotted when she starred in the 1951 Broadway play Gigi and shot to stardom taking the female lead in the 1953 film Roman Holiday for which she was the first actress to win an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA for a single performance.
She went on to star in a host of highly successful films, including the enduring classics Breakfast at Tiffany’s and My Fair Lady. During her acting career Hepburn won a record three BAFTA awards for Best British Actress in a Leading Role and was awarded the BAFTA Lifetime Achievement Award. She remains to be one of the few stars to have won Academy, BAFTA, Emmy, Grammy and Tony awards for their work.
As her life went on, Hepburn appeared in fewer films and devoted more of her time to supporting the work on UNICEF, having supported the organisation since 1954. She worked in some of the poorest communities of Africa, South America and Asia between 1988 and 1992 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of her work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in December 1992. She passed away just 1 month later at her home in Switzerland at the age of 63.
